About Montrose Point

Montrose Point is one of the most highly-regarded birding “hot spots” in the United States. Because of its prominent location along the western shore of Lake Michigan, Montrose Point is used as a stopover by an extraordinary variety of birds during spring and fall migration (over 320 species of birds have been recorded there).

The park includes two protected areas: Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary and Montrose Dunes. The sanctuary features a meadow, several wooded areas, and a small strip of shrubs and trees popularly known as “The Magic Hedge.” The dunes area includes a small beach and a rare wetland habitat called a “panne.”
