Title
Copperbelly Water Snake

Description
A Copperbelly Water Snake (Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta) basks on a log in southern Indiana. The Copperbelly Water Snake lives in only four U.S. states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Because of habitat loss and degradation (among other factors), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) listed the northern population as "threatened" in 1996. The southern population was not listed because of agreements between conservation organizations and coal mining companies. For more information see these USFWS Web pages: Copperbelly Water Snake Fact Sheet and Copperbelly Water Snake Conservation Agreements.
