# Title Caution: Asbestos Description In Illinois Beach State Park, located along Lake Michigan 40 miles north of Chicago, this sign warns beach-goers of the presence of asbestos (April 2006). The asbestos allegedly was dumped on the beach for many years by the Johns-Manville Corporation, a nearby manufacturer of asbestos-containing roofing materials. Johns-Manville is now a "Superfund Site" managed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). According to Environment News Service, lake currents have carried asbestos fibers south to Chicago beaches.
